Charming anthology of Bruce Tognazzini’s Q&A column on design published in Apple Direct. It offers a valuable bread-and-butter look at how Bruce thinks about issues like disambiguating modal and non-modal dialogs in context; case studies like “choose at least one” radio controls; etc. Aside from calling out “guidelines” where they appear, the book makes no systematic attempt to extract a framework. It’s a hodge-podge. But it’s useful for getting inside the head of a practicing expert.
Q. Contrast the “design model” and the “system image”, per Norman.
A. The design model is the creators’ conceptual model of the system; the system image is how it’s instantiated in the software.
