The Eightfold Path

Part of The four noble truths in Buddhism; the path to the elimination of Tanha and hence the cessation of Unsatisfactoriness.

A. Right speech, action, livelihood

A. Right effort, mindfulness, concentration

A. Right view, resolve

Q. What is right speech?
A. “abstaining from lying, divisive and abusive speech, idle chatter”

Q. What is right action?
A. “abstaining from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct”

Q. What is right livelihood?
A. avoid causing suffering to others by cheating, harming, killing, etc; (later texts mention not trading in weapons, living beings, meat, drink, poison)

Q. What is right effort?
A. striving to prevent The five hindrances, to generate The seven factors of awakening

Q. What is right mindfulness?
A. a quality of watching over the mind

Q. What is right concentration?
A. cultivating Samadhi; interpretation varies by tradition

Q. What is right view?
A. actions and beliefs have consequences after death

Q. What is right resolve?
A. “being resolved on renunciation, on freedom from ill will, on harmlessness”
