Revisions and Queries - Charles Gute

Via Niko Klein.

Charles Gute worked as a copy editor for an art publishing house to support himself as an artist. This book presents a collection of the annotation layers from his PDF markup, as a genre of conceptual drawing. The effect is quite compelling. Sometimes the pieces work visually on their own, without understanding the underlying concept. Sometimes they make me really want to know what was there. The markings are digital, but there’s a lot of “hand” in them, too—particularly the strike marks. Something evocative in that.

One thing that’s really striking to me is the feeling that Charles owns this annotation layer. He’s going to use it freely, not necessarily with deference for the author—after all, the author has the original, and his layer can be turned on/off at will.

Initially thinking about this in the context of Project - spring 2022 demo - a peritextual mnemonic medium.
