Keeping the big picture in mind while reading helps one learn

A core idea of How to Read a Book - Adler and van Doren. Surprisingly hard to do in practice; the medium doesn’t really help. One attempted intervention is the Textbook problem sets aren’t great reading comprehension checks.

This effect, if it exists, may relate to Pre-testing effect, though my understanding is that the latter are generally much more specific (rather than “big-picture”).
