Are we churning users faster than we accumulate them? Are a given day’s review sessions mostly newbies?
As it turns out, each month’s cohort accumulates nicely as a small part of following months’ active user base. Since launch, a given month’s new users have never represented the majority of active users. That’s partially a function of slow growth, but it’s also a function of surprisingly strong retention.
Even in November, a “launch month” with a new essay and lots more promotion, the substantial wave of new users was smaller than our pre-existing pool of active users.
See new dashboard page and new database views logs.MAUs and logs.retention.

Our 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-month retention rates have been fairly steady at around 30%, 20%, 15%, and 10% respectively. 1-month is fairly volatile, probably more a function of cohort selection than anything else.
I’ll be curious to see how November’s retention numbers shift with our new user journey and schedule.
