The Syntopicon, by Mortimer Adler, attempted to create something like an encyclopedia or dictionary, for universal terms appropriate for Syntopic reading. It featured 102 ideas like “family”, “pain”, and “time”. Each is explicated in an essay by Adler, with dense references to places in the other Great Books which treat the idea.
