Ladder is the name I use for my design and research practice. Ladder creates experimental media forms which expand what people can think and do. (aka Tools for thought, Enabling environment)
Powerful enabling environments usually arise as a byproduct of projects pursuing their own intrinsically meaningful purposes and Effective system design requires insights drawn from serious contexts of use, so Ladder must develop these forms in the context of, and in response to, serious projects with their own intrinsic purposes: scientists trying to solve important problems, authors distilling powerful ideas, artists expressing aesthetic vision. A helpful analogy: Pixar’s movies and technology development act as coupled flywheels.
The core approach: Deep collaborations between tool-makers and tool-users may support insight through making
