Delayed feedback may produce more learning than immediate feedback

I’ve heard this mentioned in a variety of learning science papers but I haven’t dug into the claim myself. I should read some reviews on this subject, because if it’s a substantial effect, it’s worth wondering: how could one create a Spaced repetition memory system which takes advantage of this effect?
